The Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival takes place this year on 10th and 11th September and is one of the town’s biggest annual events. With its humble beginnings in 1999, the Cheese Festival has grown to become the festival we know today. Here at Harts of Sturwe are proud to be sponsoring the Mousetrap theatre. Over the two day festival we have some great cooking demonstrations and fun events for you to enjoy. Leading up to this great event, we will be introducing each of our guest demonstrators that will be appearing on stage at the Mousetrap Theatre.

About Louis

Louis Haskell is a recognisable face around and about the town of Sturminster Newton, but if you don’t know him he is also the Chef at Plumber Manor, a Deluxe Hotel & Restaurant on the outskirts of the town. We spoke to Louis about his work and what he enjoys about the Cheese Festival. Mousetrap Theatre Louis Haskell Plumber Manor

Tell us a little bit about Plumber Manor?

Plumber Manor defines ‘Dorset country hotels’. A country house that's also a hotel, owned and managed by true country people. Plumber Manor was a family home when Thomas Hardy was living in nearby Sturminster Newton. Plumber Manor was built by Charles Brune in the early 17th century and has remained a family home of the Prideaux-Brune family ever since. The restaurant comprises three rooms, two of which are decorated with family portraits. The Cellar Room features a vaulted brick ceiling and has been hand-painted to depict an authentic country scene.

Can you tell us what you enjoy about the Cheese festival?

I really love the variety of local food producers. I find it a real inspiration for thinking up new menu ideas. It is a great event for the town, bringing in new faces and giving the locals a great festival right on their doorstep. But most of all I love the cider and beer tents!

What is your favourite Cheese?

My favourite cheese would be a good old traditional mature Cheddar or a nice creamy Cambozola.

What would your ideal job be if you weren't doing what you are now?

I’ve wanted to be chef for as long as I can remember. If I had to choose another occupation, it would be a musician or something within the music industry.

When and Where?

You will be able to see Louis on stage at the Mousetrap Theatre on Saturday 10th September at 2pm. Please come along and we hope you enjoy the Cheese Festival.
