HARTS LOVE THE PLANET

Our Eco-Approach

We're an independent family business based in the beautiful Dorset countryside and the heart of the Blackmore Vale - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

As a company we're committed to doing what we can to ensure that areas like this will be enjoyed by future generations and so we are working hard to reduce the impact our business has on the environment.

Below are some of the initiatives we are undertaking to do our bit to help the planet

Award Winning Sustainability

Our efforts to lower the impact our business has on the environment haven’t gone unnoticed.

We were delighted to be awarded the Sustainability Initiative Award at the Good Retail Awards 2021.

The sustainability award recognises retailers that have successfully implemented sustainability initiatives within their business.

The judges were impressed with the overall commitment shown by Harts and the lengths that we have gone to to lower our carbon footprint.

Green Packaging

We ship a high quantity of orders each day and so saw this as an opportunity to have a significant impact in reducing our carbon footprint.

To reduce our reliance on plastic based packaging we use eco-friendly, biodegradable filler instead of polystyrene.

Made from a GM-free maize starch, this 100% biodegradable packing filler can be reused, composted or dissolved away down the sink.

In addition, we also reuse any cardboard boxes that we can from those we receive from suppliers.

Bricks & Mortar

As well as our efforts focused on the mail order aspects of our business we have also made changes to our store.

In order to be more energy efficient we have installed replacement LED lighting and an air source heat pump which together will save 46.2 tonnes of CO2 per year.

We have also installed solar panels which cover some of our electricity requirements and make a further reduction in our carbon footprint

The judges were impressed with the overall commitment shown by Harts and the lengths that we have gone to to lower our carbon footprint.

These projects have been part funded by Low Carbon Dorset as part of the European Regional Development Fund.

In addition, we recycle substantial amounts of cardboard and plastic and have a 1100L recycling bin for glass, paper and other mixed recycling.

Green Products

We also understand the importance of sourcing and stocking products which make a difference.

We're always on the lookout for products which reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill, can be reused or recycled, or are made from recycled or sustainable materials.

Our product catalogue includes a large number of products which fall into these categories and we are always on the lookout for more.
