On Saturday 20th May Alan Cavendish, warehouse manager at Harts of Stur, will be swapping his forklift truck and packing boxes for a flying helmet and goggles as he embarks on a Sponsored Wing Walk for Forest Holme Hospice. A brave man indeed as he’s scared of heights!

It’s not the first time Alan has put himself forward to raise money for good causes. In 2014 he undertook a charity head shave to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Of his latest challenge Alan comments: “As I'm a little bit crazy, I have decided to take part in a wing walk to raise much needed funds for Forest Holme Hospice in Poole. It is a great cause, and sadly one that many of us will need, either for ourselves or for someone we love.” He also added: “If it helps persuade you, I'm pretty scared of heights!” Furthermore, Alan has had to watch what he eats in the run up to his sponsored wing walk. Because there is a 12 stone maximum weight limit he’s had to shed a few pounds of timber. But it’s a tiny sacrifice to make for such a good cause.

Where and when

Alan’s wing walk will take place from Compton Abbas Airfield on Saturday 20th May. Due to take off at 11am (weather permitting), he’ll be on board a vintage Stearman biplane owned by Aerobatic Tactics. They are the only company in the UK with permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to provide wing walking for fundraising purposes. And for those who don’t know Compton Abbas Airfield it’s a lovely little airfield four miles south of Shaftesbury. Furthermore, it has a great restaurant/cafe and amazing panoramic views. Well worth a visit. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="1024"]Forest-Holme-Hospice-Sunset-ImageImage courtesy of Aerobatic Tactics[/caption]

About the charity

Forest Holme Hospiceis tucked away in the centre of Poole. It provides exceptional and individually tailored care to those facing a life-limiting illness across East Dorset. Although Forest Holme is an NHS hospice, it is reliant on charitable donations to continue to provide excellent palliative and end of life care. As a result their charity needs to raise over £500,000 every year to support the different areas of the hospice. This could include the purchasing of special equipment, funding of nurses and complementary therapies in addition to counselling and bereavement support to patients and their families.

Please donate

Alan is aiming to raise a minimum of £800 doing the wing walk. Help him smash this target by donating via his JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Alan-Cavendish. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. Every penny will be gratefully received. Everyone here at Harts of Stur wishes Alan the best of luck. Chocs away! Just don’t look down!
