The Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival takes place this year on 10th and 11th September and is one of the town’s biggest annual events. With its humble beginnings in 1999, the Cheese Festival has grown to become the festival we know today. Here at Harts of Sturwe are proud to be sponsoring the Mousetrap theatre. Over the two day festival we have some great cooking demonstrations and fun events for you to enjoy. Leading up to this great event, we will be introducing each of our guest demonstrators that will be appearing on stage at the Mousetrap Theatre.

About James

James Fowler is the owner of The Larder House in Southbourne, Bournemouth. James was also crowned as World Class UK Bartender of the Year in 2014, after competing over the course of ten months around the world. With around 15 years’ experience James continues on his quest to discover even more about food & drink. The-Mousetrap-James-Fowler

Tell us a little bit about The Larder House?

So I have The Larder House and The Library Cocktail bar in Southbourne, Bournemouth. The restaurant was opened in 2011 and focuses heavily on our wood burning oven. We class it as rustic European in style with lots of emphasis on slow cooking, fresh fish, cheeses & charcuterie. We are well known for our drinks too which all originate from Europe. The Library cocktail bar upstairs is different in the fact it encompasses the global drinking scene and we currently work with a global travel menu whereby the drinker can learn about drinking culture through the presentation & tastes in our drinks.

Can you tell us what you enjoy about the Cheese festival?

Besides the abundance of cheese, I love the relaxed feel of walking around the site. The stalls are always great quality too. I’ve been every year for 6 years, in fact I used to host the cheese & single malt tastings in the Scout hut, as well as Dorset’s Best Cheeseboard competition.

What is your favourite Cheese?

Well I love cheese so this is too hard to call. I sell a lot of cheese at my restaurant too, so we are good friends! I generally only ever eat the cheese on its own or just with bread - I love the natural flavours too much! If I was forced to take one cheese to a dessert island it would probably have to be Vacherin, It can melt in the sun!!

What would your ideal job be if you weren't doing what you are now?

I would probably be a food or drink journalist travelling the world tasting and writing about it. I would struggle to think of a job I could do without food or drink.

When and Where?

You will be able to see James on stage at the Mousetrap Theatre on Saturday 10th September at 4pm. Please come along and we hope you enjoy the Cheese Festival.
